Barriers and Employment

Sometimes people experience what is known as barriers to employment or training. It might be that someone has gone through a hard time and experienced things like mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction, family breakdown, homelessness, been in trouble with the law or other issues that have been difficult to deal with.

When we go through a lot it can be hard to get employment, keep a job or concentrate on education. For some people you can lose self esteem and want to give up on the idea of working. It is important to know that every person has unique talents and there are programs out there to help you get the skills and confidence you need.

You can contact your local Centrelink office and ask for some contact details of who can help, alternatively you could contact Boystown and ask about their Get Set For Work Program by phoning (07) 3368 3399. Or you can contact Challenge Employment and Training on (07) 3282 8000 ... the choice is yours.

Another option is you might like to contact the Steps to Success Program at Ipswich City Council that can help you find a job or course. It is a voluntary program that will focus on your strengths and help you achieve your goals. It will also work on any barriers you have, assist with job preparation and support you to keep the job.
