Budget 2009-2010: Youth Transition Expo scores funding in 2009-2010 Budget

IPSWICH City Council will continue to deliver a range of youth-oriented programs through the 2009-2010 Budget.

Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said $10,000 had been allocated this year for the running of a range of youth initiatives including activities during Youth Week 2010.

"There is also funding of $11,000 in the budget for the ongoing support of the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council (IYAC) including the implementation of programs," she said.

Cr Ireland said the current IYAC was made up of 17 members ranging in age from 12 to 17-years-old.

"The IYAC was founded to give Ipswich youth a special forum in which they can express a wide variety of views and ideas about issues affecting them.

"The youth council members assist the community and council to understand and support the current needs of young people.

"The IYAC provides a forum for young people to express a wide variety of views, ideas, issues and plan and implement youth activities."

Cr Ireland said council would also provide funding of $14,000 for the implementation of youth programs including a Youth Transition Expo and co-ordination of the Youth Interagency.

"The funds provided by council for youth projects and programs will help to encourage the city's youth to become more involved in their local community and the activities taking place."
