YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament

I am Natalie Blacklock and I am the Member for Inala for the 13th Annual YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. Although, anytime I say this to someone, many of them have to ask "What exactly is YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament?" The answer to this is simple; the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is an exciting and unique apolitical youth forum that empowers young people to have a positive impact upon their local communities and the future of Queensland.

The program which runs from the middle of March to the end of September each year is a youth services initiative of the State Council of YMCAs of Queensland Inc. and is operated by the YMCA of Brisbane. The program is sponsored by the Queensland Government through the Department of Communities and supported by Members of Parliament, Local Governments and Parliamentary Staff as well as other local community groups and social networks.

The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is a valuable and unique youth forum where young people are placed in the role of a Member of State Parliament. In their role as a Youth Member they represent their state electorate and investigate issues affecting young people, resulting in making marked improvements in these areas for their community.

The Youth Members work in committee groups to formulate and critique legislation on issues that occur State-wide across Queensland. The Youth Members then meet in Parliament House to debate these issues and raise awareness of the issues specific to their electorate, following the Parliamentary system as closely as possible. Over the course of their elected term, the Youth Members work in their committee portfolio groups to formulate Local Action Plans to then implement into their electorates.
